'The Littlest Emu' is a simply told tale about the lives of baby emus and their special skill in distracting hunters away from their brothers and sisters. The writing style is nonfiction in emphasising that the smallest emu chick in a family group uses itself as a decoy to distract hunters and so save its siblings.

Themes of community and selflessness emerge from this story. The simple illustrations support the story. Trevor Brownley is a Wongutha man. The area he calls 'his country' includes Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Laverton, Pinjin, Murrin Murrin, Leonora, Menzies, Yarri and 'everything in between'.
