Lydia lives in the outback and loves sport. She asks her animal friends to play various sports, but they are all too good. Kangaroo could jump the highest for basketball, emu ran the fastest and koala climbed the best. After a while of feeling sad, Lydia realised she still wanted to play sport with her friends, it did not matter if she was not the best. They decided to play soccer and Lydia finds she is a very good goalie.
This engaging story begins with a small biography of Lydia Williams, Australia’s goalkeeper for the Matildas, with a photo of her as a young girl. The repetitive narrative includes a small number of Australian animals with a larger variety seen in the illustrations. This book is perfect for encouraging girls to follow and enjoy sport, and Williams is a fine role model for all, but especially, Indigenous girls.
Lydia Williams is an Indigenous Australian soccer player. She grew up on the red dirt of Western Australia.
