This book is based on stories the author's grandfather told her about his childhood fishing and hunting. The main character, Sam is the fifth of thirteen children and the importance of family shines through the text.

This story is set on Thursday Island and the vibrant colour pencil illustrations, in a naive childhood style, bring the setting and action to life. Monique has used the Torres Strait Island flag colours thematically throughout to complement sense of place and belonging. This book validates Aboriginal and Torres Strait life experiences and would introduce a wider Australian school audience to the strong indigenous cultures of this area.

Monique Russell is a descendant of the Torres Strait Islands people.
