This compact chapter book depicts what is special about the Australian bush, and how important it is to look after it. The theme of the importance of keeping secrets is sustained through the interaction of Debbie and her grandfather, Dada Keen. It explores the idea that keeping secrets can be important in order to preserve and protect plants and animals and to share secrets only with those who will respect and preserve such treasures. This is the first of six books in the Waarda series (Waarda is Nyungar for talking and sharing stories and information).
Tjalaminu Mia and her granddaughter Jessica Lister, are Nyungar women with bloodline links to the Minang and Goreng peoples of the south-west of Western Australia. Illustrators Sally Morgan, of the Bailgu people of the Pilbara region of Western Australia and Tracey Gibbs, have created a colourful cover and simple black line illustrations with grey wash paint to support the text.
